What Is HVAC?
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It encompasses the systems that control the temperature, humidity, and air quality inside your home or building. This includes furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, thermostats, and ventilation systems.
Why It Matters
HVAC systems account for roughly 40–50% of a home's total energy consumption. An aging or undersized system works harder, costs more to operate, and delivers less comfort. A properly sized, modern system can reduce energy bills by 20–40% while dramatically improving indoor air quality and comfort.

Terms You Should Know
SEER Rating
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio — measures the cooling efficiency of an air conditioner or heat pump. Higher SEER = more efficient. Current federal minimum for Indiana is 14 SEER2.
AFUE
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency — measures furnace efficiency as a percentage. A 96% AFUE furnace converts 96 cents of every dollar of fuel into heat.
Heat Pump
A system that moves heat rather than generating it — extracting heat from outdoor air to warm your home in winter, and reversing the process to cool in summer. Very efficient in moderate climates.
Mini-Split
A ductless HVAC system with an outdoor compressor and one or more indoor air handlers. Ideal for additions, garages, or rooms without existing ductwork.
Manual J Calculation
The industry-standard method for calculating the correct HVAC system size for a specific home. An improperly sized system — too large or too small — will be inefficient and uncomfortable.
Air Handler
The indoor component of a split HVAC system that circulates conditioned air through the ductwork.
Common Questions
How do I know if my HVAC system needs replacing?
Systems over 15 years old, requiring frequent repairs, or causing noticeably uneven temperatures throughout the home are strong candidates for replacement. Rising energy bills are also a key indicator.
What size HVAC system do I need?
Sizing is based on a Manual J load calculation that accounts for your home's square footage, insulation, windows, and local climate. Bigger is not better — an oversized system short-cycles, wasting energy and causing humidity problems.
What is the difference between a heat pump and a furnace?
A furnace burns fuel (gas or oil) to generate heat. A heat pump moves existing heat from outside air into your home — much more efficient in mild weather, but may need a backup heat source in very cold Indiana winters.
Industry Note: Indiana's climate (Zone 5) means HVAC systems must handle both hot, humid summers and cold winters. We size and select systems specifically for this climate to ensure year-round performance.
